Phases of an Examination

Obtaining optimal results from the initial phase is a crucial part of the treatment, which is why it’s important to work closely with the patient.

Post-Op Instructions

Contact us at 450-668-0760 if you notice any unusual symptoms. Please read the post-operative instructions below carefully, and make sure you follow them.

You are under the influence of medication following surgery; therefore, do not drive, drink alcoholic beverages, sign legal documents or make any important decisions for the next 24 hours.

  1. Take medication (such as):
    • Anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen) 400-600 mg every 6 hours, alternating with 2 x Tylenol 500 mg as needed
    • Antibiotics
  2.  Apply an ice pack to your face for 10 minutes. Repeat this application (every 30 minutes) during the first 24 hours.
  3. Avoid rinsing energetically for the first 4 days. However you could rince with saline water (250 ml water + ½ tea spoon salt) for two weeks (do not swallow).
  4. Your face may swell for a few days after the surgery. Repested applications of hot compresses will help decrease this swelling. Allow 4 days before appling hot compresses.
  5. We recommend a soft diet for the first week.
  6. We recommend that you reduce your activities and avoid any intense physical activities for one week.
  7. Smoking interferes with the healing process. We therefore recommend that you avoid smoking.
  8. A dressing may cover the surgical area; do not worry if part of it falls off. This dressing should be in place a few days (3 to 14 days). Take off only if it becomes very mobile.
    • Use Q-Tips soaked with water or rinse mouth with chlorexidine at the surgical area. Do not brush. Do not use straw.

  9. We recommend that you use 2 pillows while sleeping, in order to keep your head slightly elevated.
  10. If continual or excessive bleeding occurs, apply soft pressure with a moist tea bag for 15 minutes in sat(based) position. Contact us if the bleeding persists.
  11. Contact us if:
    • Continual and excessive bleeding occurs.
    • The pain is not controlled with the prescribed medication.
    • A marked swelling occurs.

Dr. Pierre-Yves Thibodeau

Dr. Thibodeau obtained his Doctorate in Dental Medicine at the University of Montreal in 1981. He then practiced general dentistry in the Magdalen Islands until 1989. In 1991, he completed his specialization in periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania with honours (Director’s Award). Since then, he has been practicing periodontics with an implantology service in a private practice in Laval.

Dr. Thibodeau is a member of the Association des Parodontistes du Québec. Thanks to the people of Laval and the surrounding areas, Dr. Thibodeau has been practicing his profession for more than 30 years.

Dr. Yoonkyung Oh

Dr. Oh obtained her Doctorate in Dental Medicine at the University of Montreal in 2009. She then pursued her multidisciplinary residency at the University of Rochester in 2010 and continued her post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Oh completed her periodontics Fellowship in 2013 as well as a Masters of Science from the University of Pennsylvania, where she later was a teacher in the Department of Periodontics. Dr. Yoonkyung Oh practiced in a private clinic in New York until 2018. She currently practices periodontics with an implantology service in private practice in Laval.

Dr. Oh is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She is a member of several associations, including the American Academy of Periodontology and the Association des Parodontistes du Québec.

Dr. Sandrine Barakat

Dr. Barakat obtained her Doctorate in Dental Medicine at the University of Montreal in 2009. She pursued her post-doctoral studies until 2012 to complete her specialty in periodontics as well as a Master of Science at the University of Pennsylvania with honours (Director’s Award Postdoctoral Periodontics from the University of Pennsylvania). She practiced in a private clinic in Philadelphia until 2015 while teaching at the department of periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Barakat currently practices Periodontics with an implantology service in private practice in Laval.

Dr. Sandrine Barakat is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She is a member of several associations, including the American Academy of Periodontology and serves as the treasurer for the Association des Parodontistes du Québec.
